Veggie pasta! How delicious!

I’m so behind. School has been smothering me. But it’s been good. I’m a academic nerd, true fact.

Well, on the veggie front, things have been going well! Better then I would have ever expected. I have had very few meat cravings, but my self-restraint has been pretty solid so it’s been fairly easy ;). I’m super excited for this upcoming week and all need new food recipes I’ll try! I finally have my appetite back (and MAN is it back!) so I’m happy :).

Eating however, needs to improve. I find myself relying on dinner to only get my veggies. I need to start incorporating some good stuff into my lunches and snacks!

Speaking of lunch, I need to address my lunches for school. I always forget to pack my lunch so 3 days out of the week I don’t eat from 7:30-2:30 (or 3pm, depending). NOT GOOD. By the end of the school day I’m starving and end up overeating.
This is a fairly common issue so this week, I’m going to try to do my best to make the effort (and remember!) to pack myself lunch so I don’t get to hungry.

What’s so exciting about going veg is that it forces me to try new things. I’ve gotten into SUCH a food rut and now I’m starting to branch out and push my limits in the name of good food!

Note To Self: Go To The Grocery Store February 20, 2010

First and foremost, I need vegetarian food! Must make a trip to Trader Joes. Today’s food consisted of:
Breakfast:
– 2 pieces of toast with almond butter and agave nectar
Lunch:
– A peanut butter sandwich
– Frozen blueberries
Dinner:
– 1/2 an egg
– Peanuts
– Asparagus
Snack:
Puffins cereal

Oh dear. I need variety. I need food options. I need my appetite! I think my appetite is sloooowly returning. But I’m anxious and I can’t wait to really seek my teeth into this lifestyle (oh hey pun!).

Protein: The Non-Meat Edition February 19, 2010

So back when I was eating meat (2 days ago :P). I had issues getting enough protein. I remember back from my eating disorder days not getting enough protein and having to sit in the dietitians office and bounce ideas off of one another in an attempt to increase the amount. Still even now, completely recovered, I know I need more.

How to Calculate Your Protein Needs:
1. Weight in pounds divided by 2.2 = weight in kg
2. Weight in kg x 0.8-1.8 gm/kg = protein gm.

Use a lower number if you are in good health and are sedentary (i.e., 0.8). Use a higher number (between 1 and 1.8) if you are under stress, are pregnant, are recovering from an illness, or if you are involved in consistent and intense weight or endurance training.

Ok, here goes:
114/2.2= 51.82kg
51.82 X 0.9= 41-46gm/day

So I thought, ok today I’ll see just how much protein I consume a day and then go from there.
Here’s the count:
Breakfast (12gm):
– 2 pieces of toast with peanut butter and agave nectar
Lunch (7gm):
– A plain whole wheat bagel
– Frozen blueberries
Snack (13gm):
– Plain Greek yogurt with granola
Dinner (9gm):
– 1/4 of Trader Joes Spinach pizza
– Salad with pickles organic dressing
Total Protein Count: 41gm!

Well, look-a-there. And I must admit I’d probably get more protein if I could stand eating more (damn stomach virus!). How exciting to know that I am getting enough protein! Once I start my strength training again, I know I’ll increase it even further.

Which brings me to the content of my diet. It’s still not exactly where I want it to be (balanced-health-wise). But at this point I’m just eating what my body will accept since I’ve been sick. If the only thing I can stand is cereal and bread, then that’s what I’ll have. I think it’s important to get calories in when you’re sick. (Especially if you’ve dropped something like 9lbs in a week in a half).

Well, hey. I’m Allie. I’m a 20 year old college kid (geology major! yay rocks!) and finally made the decision to go vegetarian.

To address the ‘why’:
It’s a long time coming. But as a huge supporter of whole, natural foods that do not include “non-foods” or “enhanced foods”, meat is the last barrier I have left to break. Now, if I could be assured that every cut of meat I ever bought wasn’t subjected to antibiotics, steroids, pesticides, chemicals, or other poisonous nonsense that doesn’t belong in my body, I’m not sure I would give it up. But, unfortunately, the world I live in does not offer that. So this is my stand against that. As Michael Pollan says, “You vote with your fork. 3 times a day”. How right you are, Pollan, how right you are.

Today’s food consisted of:
Breakfast:
– Kashi cereal with rice milk
Lunch:
– More Kashi cereal with rice milk!
Dinner:
– Whole wheat sandwich with cucumber, provolone cheese, and vinegar
Snack:
– Frozen blueberries (Mmm!)

Look-a-there! No meat :D.
Although I did have this fleeting movement where I reached for lunch meat, and then realized, “oh wait!”. Haha, glad I caught myself!
Ok. I will address the why I ate so little. I currently have a stomach virus. Which involves a lot of nausea! Every time I go to eat, think about food, look at food, I just get sick to my stomach :(. It’s definitely putting a damper on all my vegetarian food ideas! But I’m fairly confident that all the vitamins and water I’m downing will do some healing :). (Soon, please!).
